Visited 6 and 7 April 2024 – our first ever UrbEx. We accessed one of the small cylindrical tanks (a lot of rusty dust in here – good to bring a mask if you are health-conscious) and one of the large tanks with the big central ladder.

The large tank (the one on the left) was not so difficult to enter, and the air quality was much better than expected. You need to climb down a two-storey ladder affixed to the tank’s side after climbing through a slightly narrow access hatch. It’s not so difficult to do this but as this article says, BE CAREFUL when climbing up/down old ladders!

We didn’t enter the other large tank on the right. This one is only accessible by descending down the big ladder. Looks terrifying and nerve-wracking, also quite dangerous. If you don’t access that tank the difficulty rating of the site is surely far lower than an 8/10.

A couple of dog walkers around the area. Also, there was a film crew in the tanks when we went. Seems like it can be semi popular on sunny weekends.

1974-1979 Yes, five years there. It was an amazing collection of great memories for me, personally, and for my five-year old son, [now 54 years old]. 98G German linguist with Branflake. It was my honor to be assigned there for the 5-yr duration, while I was able to complete BA [Univ of Maryland} and MA work with Boston U. It was so preferable to other assignments re: the EW side of my MOS at Fort Hood, TX or Reforger. All of the experiences were unmatched, the beer parties [Schultheiss beer], the West German [Berlin] folks and their hospitality. I also learned first hand that the nude beach on the opposite side of the lake was not all that ‘sexy’. It was also bazaar during the visits I made to the observation platforms at Brandenburg Gate, among other sites; to be looking across the wall, concertina wire and tank traps and dogs while people on the East Berlin side stared at us from their one-and-only observation platform. Of course, the guards in the towers were not primarily looking at us but to make sure their own citizens did not try escape. To those of you who served, thank you. I know you sacrificed (most of you} three years and probably some of you have endured “hearing” loss. I was “Omar” and my best friend was Big Bobbert. All of us collected the jokes [some were funny] spoken by our adversaries and was saved in a Pass-On Book. And I am grateful to each of you for sharing some of your experiences there.

Hi Ele, thanks for your comment. I generally don’t give GPS coordinates to find all the most interesting areas, as they’re all interesting if you don’t know what you’ll find. Give yourself some time, poke around, explore, and you’ll find all sorts of wonderful things. You’ll probably find stuff that isn’t featured on this site. I’m only scratching the surface. I didn’t find the mosaic myself the first couple of times I was there. So that’s why I don’t give the GPS coordinates. I’m happy to point you in the general direction, but I don’t want to make it too easy – that would spoil the fun.

Went in today. The site has been secured some time ago, with metal panels inserted on the inside of all windows and doors and bolted to the floor. However, there is access although some climbing is required to go in and out.
The swimming pool is almost entirely trashed: not a pristine explore but it’s easy to get to.
